Modern Square Dancing (MSD Dancing) is FUN. Pure & Simple FUN.
MSD Dancing has been around for a long time, having evolved from various types of dancing in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and America (it is also known as "America's Folk Dance"). Taking bits and pieces from Scottish and English Country Dancing, French court dances, Contra dancing, and old fashioned square dancing, among others, MSD is a fast-paced, complex dance form.
Done in groups of 8 people, it involves cooperation, and understanding of what the other 7 dancers are doing, and a quick mind & quick step, to interpret the calls and immediately dance the steps.
This is not the Traditional Square Dancing that people have a tendency to associate with what they used to see on the old TV shows Hee Haw & Laugh In. In its modern form, it uses many different types of music (my personal favourite is Classic Rock and alternative) and a whole night can go by without ever using a country tune. With the change in music and growth of adding more and more steps to the programs, it is becoming more of a young person's dance form. Fast. Complex. High Energy.
Are YOU up to it?
